We would advise that the user running the scan has a home directory, and that the environment variable HOME points to an existing and accessible directory. Another option is to add the following commands before the scan:
echo user=$USER home=$HOME
finger $USER
touch $HOME/test_file
rm -f $HOME/test_file
The first two are just to check that the information printed is consistent. The last two are I/O tests to the directory pointed to by HOME.
